The Democratic Republic of the Congo, known until 1997 as Zaïre, is a country located in Central Africa, with a small length of Atlantic coastline. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the second largest country in Africa. It borders nine countries: Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, TanzaniaUganda, and Zambia.

This central African country is, with a UN estimated population of 66,020,000, the nineteenth most populous nation in the world, and the fourth most populous nation in Africa, as well as the most populous country where French is an official language.

The oldest national park in Africa is the Congo’s Virunga National Park. It is home to rare mountain gorillas, lions, and elephants.

Taking pictures of locals is ill advised as they get very upset, for they believe that “capturing a person’s image” removes his spirit.
