Day 1
We start our day with an early pre-departure meeting and then head to the Hwange National Park, which is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe, where you can experience your first safari game drive before camping in the National Parks main camp.
The Park hosts over 100 mammal and 400 bird species, including 19 large herbivores and eight large carnivores. All Zimbabwe’s specially protected animals are to be found in Hwange. The population of African wild dogs to be found in Hwange is thought to be one of the larger surviving groups in Africa today. Other major predators include the lion, leopard, spotted hyena and cheetah.
Day 2
This morning you can have another early morning game drive in the Hwange National Park before we head to Bulawayo. Here you can visit the Matopos National Park and track Rhinos on foot, with a guide, while also looking for other game and learning about the different uses of plants in the park.
Day 3
We set off early this morning from Bulawayo and drive to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. These are the largest collection of ruins in Africa south of the Sahara and are testament to a culture of great wealth and great architectural skill.
Built between the 11th and 15th centuries, Great Zimbabwe was home to a cattle-herding people who also became adept at metal-working. The granite walls – embellished with turrets, towers, platforms and elegantly sculpted stairways – seem to have had no defensive function. But, in the words of archaeologist Peter Garlake, they display “an architecture that is unparalleled elsewhere in Africa or beyond.”
Day 4 – 6
We leave the Great Zimbabwe Ruins area today and drive to Antelope Park which is known as one of Southern Africa’s Most Intriguing Destinations, and winners of the “Environmental Award” at the 2013 AZTA Awards ceremony. Antelope Park is home to the world famous African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) lion rehabilitation programme which is a multi-phase lion conservation initiative featured in the hit UK TV documentary “Lion Country”. It is Africa’s first genuine programme working to ethically re-introduce the offspring of captive-bred African lions back into the wild.
Set in over 3000 acres of open savannah grassland, Antelope Park is a unique game reserve and a haven of tranquillity set in the African bush, welcoming guests and volunteer eco-tourists alike to the charming and remarkable camp site. Walk with lions, ride through the wilderness on elephant or horseback, view the abundance of wildlife in the Park or canoe on the scenic lake. During the evening, our exclusive Night Encounters offer a truly amazing, close up experience of lions hunting in their natural environment.
Day 7
We continue our journey through Zimbabwe today and head to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. Tonight we will stay at the Kuimba Shiri Bird Park is situated on the shores of Lake Chivero, in a National Park boasting over 460 species of indigenous birds in the wild. Kuimba Shiri Bird Park is the only bird park in Zimbabwe and is home to orphaned, injured and abandoned birds.
You can also fish for carp, bream and bass to name a few or enjoy game viewing by boat.
Day 8
We leave the Bird Park early today and drive to Chinhoyi Caves which are a group of caves in Zimbabwe. The cave system is composed of limestone and dolomite, and the descent to the main cave with its pool of cobalt blue water is very impressive.
Day 9 – 10
We leave Chinhoyi Caves early today and drive on to Lake Kariba, which is one of the four largest man-made lakes in the world and the second largest in Africa. Lake Kariba is a unique place of outstanding beauty and unforgettable scenery and is surrounded by excellent national parks – it really is a special place to take a safari by houseboat, relax, fish and view wild game.
Day 11 – 14
We leave Lake Kariba and drive back to Victoria Falls completing our loop of Zimbabwe. You will have a few days in Victoria Falls to take in the sights and sounds of Victoria Falls and this will be the perfect way to wrap up a fantastic expedition through Zimbabwe.
You can get up close and personal with Victoria Falls, Africa’s largest waterfall at 1.7km wide, or view the falls from above by helicopter or light aircraft. For those more adventurous soles you can white water raft or boogie board the Grade 5 rapids, bungee jump, experience a thrill seeking jet boat ride on the Great Zambezi River or cage dive with crocodiles. For those wanting a more relaxing experience why not settle in on a Sunset Booze Cruise on the Zambezi River. These are just some of the wide variety of optional activities you can experience whilst in Victoria Falls.
You can wander around the shops and curio markets to that sell a large range of handmade souvenirs. We can also have a drink and evening meal at the all you can eat BOMAS restaurant serving a large variety of game meats and other local cuisine in a truly African setting.
